Maldives
One of the most stunning destinations in the world, The Maldives are a jewel in the Indian Ocean that has amazed visitors for decades.
Maldives travel guide
Instagram must have invented the Maldives – these untouched Indian Ocean islands located just off the subcontinent of India, almost 1,200 of them in all, are picture-perfect. Each is surrounded by its own coral reef, with an unsurpassed setting in a series of 26 different atolls just across the equator. Whatever you imagined a paradise island to look like, you’ll find it here, with untouched stretches of startling white sand offset against the turquoise of the sea and the blue of the sky. This is paradise found.
With each island encircled by its own coral reef, the marine life visible under the sea is breathtaking. The Maldives is renowned for offering some of the best deep sea diving and snorkelling in the world. But that’s not all. The weather is sublime throughout the year, the islands offer the ultimate Robinson Crusoe experience – you really are in the middle of nowhere here – and the seafood is superb. In addition, many of these magnificent islands are made up of just one luxurious resort that takes up the entire space… you’re on your own little slice of paradise away from the world. You can’t get more romantic than that!
So many of the Maldives islands are still uninhabited, meaning that you can explore unspoilt beaches and leave your footprints on the sand on your exclusive beach getaway. In addition, your water sports options are numerous, and with the stunning weather in this part of the world, your beach time is unlimited.
Best time to visit: If you can, visit between November and April (high season is from December to March, so ideally come just before or after those months).
Best Area for Sightseeing: So many islands, so little time… See Things to do in the Maldives below for some great ideas.
Shopping in the Maldives: Head for Male for stunning souvenirs and handicrafts, particularly Orchard Magu and Majeedhee Magu, the capital of the Maldives. The markets always offer a traditional experience and great produce – try Male Local Market for fruit and veg, and the Fish Market there for atmospheric photographs.
Food & Restaurants in the Maldives: You’ll enjoy plenty of fresh seafood, coconut and rice while you’re on vacation, in dishes with Indian and Sri Lankan influences. The inhabited islands are home to numerous traditional eateries and cafes, and the resorts offer world-class dining.
Nightlife: This is a romantic destination more than a party place, so nightlife is laidback. Some of the resorts do offer nightclubs, bars and entertainment.
