To this day, Charleston still boasts those elegant mansions, lush trees draped with moss, horse-drawn carriages and gas-lit cobbled streets.
You can step back in time to experience those halcyon days in mansions turned museums that tell the story of that genteel time as well as at famous Fort Sumter, where the Civil War between the states started decades ago.
But there’s a modern side to Charleston, too, and plenty of natural beauty, including beautiful beaches on Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island and the Isle of Palm. Shopping in Charleston: The city’s main shopping street, King Street, is often closed to traffic so that people can wander around at leisure and shop. The refurbished old buildings here are filled with stunning shops, restaurants and art galleries. The street is divided into 3 distinct sections – Upper King Street is renowned for its design and dining offerings, while Middle King Street is fashion-forward and Lower King Street is home to antique stores. Charming Charleston City Market is another popular place to shop, with open-air stalls offering every type of merchandise, from arts and crafts to souvenirs.
Food & Restaurants in Charleston: The city’s cuisine is legendary, not only because of an abundance of superb local produce, but also because so many creative chefs have headed here to offer their culinary skills. You’ll find adventurous cuisines, fine dining, regional delicacies and everything in between.

There’s also Seabrook Island’s miles of untouched sand beaches to enjoy, but these are private unless you’re staying on the island.
