COPENHAGEN

Copenhagen

Copenhagen is a cosy, lovely and inviting place to visit. Travel to Denmark's capital for top seafood, interesting attractions and an authentic hygge vibe!

What you need to know about Copenhagen

Language: Danish is spoken throughout Denmark. English is widely spoken in the major cities like Copenhagen.

Currency: Danish Krone

Banking: ATMs are found all over the country and all major cards are accepted.

Weather: The spring is the nicest time to visit Copenhagen with its comparatively temperate, mild weather.

Visit Copenhagen in the milder months

Although the summer months are naturally warmer, they are also filled with festivals and events so the city is a lot more crowded. Now if this is your thing then totally check it out and you'll undoubtedly have a grand time.

We recommend planning travel to Copenhagen in Spring when the weather is milder, the people are fewer and the deals on hotels are often better as it has not yet reached peak season.

Attractions like Tivoli Gardens and Dyrehaven are also really lovely this time of year after winter's biting winds have receded.

Experience an 'independent' town within the Danish capital

There is a part of Copenhagen called Christiania where the locals have the view that Danish law does not apply to them and that they are self-governing. It is a lovely, cooky area to visit and has a similar vibe in some respects to Montmartre in Paris; an area famous for its emphasis on free expression, compassion and the encouragement of art.

There is no official acknowledgement of the legality of this supposedly autonomous area and in actuality there is no legal standing for it but regardless it is a really fun place to visit and where you can find plenty of vegan & organic tasty treats, locals that will debate the finer points of their area's status with you in a passionate but friendly way (be prepared to say "oh right?" a lot as you spar over the importance of common law vs. expression) and maybe hit up one of the bars that put on live music and performances.

Tivoli is a must for anybody travelling to Copenhagen

Tivoli is a truly magical place that you absolutely must experience. It is the oldest amusement park in the world and is where you will find some beautiful examples of fairground rides that hark back to the halcyon days of amusement parks of yesteryear. The rollercoaster and other lovely examples of rides that were built as early as the 1910s offer the rare chance to enjoy a really original ride experience.

There are contemporary, modern rides on offer as well for those looking to indulge in bigger, bolder thrills too so the park caters for everybody.

As well as the rides and amusement park experience, Tivoli also hosts live music ranging from rock through to classical that can be listened to amidst lovely period architecture before ducking into some of the restaurants within the Gardens' grounds.

As a seasonal attraction there are specific times when Tivoli is open to visit. The summer season runs from late march (or early April sometimes) until about September, it reopens around Halloween time for a few weeks and then is again back open for the festive, Christmas season from late November until the end of the year. Each of the periods when the park is open are slightly tweaked to cater to the time of year so expect some nice seasonal touches that match whether it is summer or winter.

Check it out in the warmer months for great outdoor display of planted specimens coming into bloom. The glasshouses that are climate controlled and give an amazing reprieve from wintery weather if you duck in there during the colder months of the year.

Museum fun that is signed, sealed and delivered

For the fans of a nice wander around a museum there are a few options like the Danish War Museum and the National Gallery of Denmark that houses more than thirty-five thousand works of art! There is something for everyone no matter what your preference is when it comes to museum time.

The more random side of Copenhagen's museum options are the little gems such as the 'Post & Tele Museum' that is now known as ENIGMA. It offers a fun look into the history of communication and comes complete with permanent exhibitions that look at how we communicate with one another, and how technology has influenced and changed our comms. habits over the last century.
